The Description Tag

The description tag is a meta tag that Google and other search engines can use to display information about the content of a particular page on your website. Google call this the snippet.

The description tag appears under the title tag is the search engine results page.

In our example above the title tag is highlighted in blue and is used as a link to the website, the description tag is below. The key phrase is highlighted in bold in both the title and the description tag.

Each page needs to have its own unique description tag and should be a good description of what that page is about. - This will helps searchers to decide if your page has the information they are looking for.

You have between 150 and 160 characters to use when writing and you should try and include the keyword or phrase that you are trying to target. This will not have any effect on your SEO but can help with click through to your site

How to add the Description Tag to your meta data

The description tag can be added to the meta data in the section of the HTML files on your site.

<title>Search Engine Optimisation</title>
<meta name="description" content="Search Engine Optimisation is the process of getting targeted traffic to your website....."/>
</head>

If you are using a content management system there will most probably be a section when adding a new page to add both meta description and title tags
